LPD wearing ribbons for a good cause

Throughout October and November, the officers of the Linton Police Department are donning ribbons around their badges for a good cause.

The officers are not only increasing awareness of cancer affecting men and women but also raising funds to assist with needs such as gas, meals, and lodging should an officer, friend, or family member of the Linton Police Department be diagnosed with cancer.

During October, the officers are wearing pink ribbons around their badges to raise awareness of breast cancer. During November, they will wear blue ribbons for No Shave November as well as to raise awareness for testicular and prostate cancer. The ribbons were made by Cathy Hobbs, mother of LPD Det. Logan Hobbs.

“We are trying to raise money and provide help when needed,” Det. Hobbs said.

Hobbs explained that when wearing the ribbons, officers will pay $1 per day, which equals approximately $20 per month for each officer. Collectively during October and November, the department will raise about $360 for the newly established fund. Hobbs noted the Linton FOP 105 Labor Council will match all funds, which will bring the total to around $720 by the end of November.

“When someone comes with a sickness or need, we can provide assistance,” Hobbs said. “The last time we want to see is one of our own have a bad spot because they got sick. If someone needs it, we’re here to help.”

In the past, officers have donned ribbons to raise awareness, but Chief Paul Clark is pleased to see his officers taking it one step further.

“‘Throughout my entire career, the police officers here have always had a very strong sense of community. It’s refreshing to see that continue with the next generation of police officers. It’s also nice to see them go one step further than just raising awareness,” Clark said.
