Lyons woman arrested for assisting a criminal

A 29-year-old Lyons woman was arrested on a warrant on Sept. 12 for assisting a criminal after she knowingly allowed a subject, wanted on a warrant, to hide from police.

Katrina Butler was arrested on the warrant, issued on Sept. 11, after officers received a call of a subject, with an outstanding domestic battery warrant, was at an East Bogard Street residence in Lyons.

When Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Devan Goad and Caleb Sipes arrived on the scene, they knocked on the door of the residence and announced their presence with no response. Through a sliding glass door, Goad noticed a pot on the stove and a burner turned on, which according to the probable cause affidavit, made officers believe someone was inside the residence. Officers made several additional attempts to get someone to come to the door with no response.

Deputy Bruce Porter called a number listed for the family and asked them to come to the residence for assistance. The individual attempted but was also unsuccessful in their attempt. Deputy Porter located an unlocked bedroom window and Deputy Goad opened the door and yelled in the residence for the individual wanted on warrant to come to the door. After a few minutes, Butler came out of hiding and spoke with officers through the window.

According to the probable cause, upon entering the house, officers completed an initial sweep but did not locate the individual. However, when Deputy Goad walked into the front room on the south side of the residence and looked inside a closet, he noticed small pieces of particle board and clothing laying on the floor. Upon looking at the ceiling, he noticed a piece of particle board covering the attic. Upon advising Deputies Porter and Sipes, Deputy Porter removed the piece of wood and found the individual hiding in the attic.

When talking to Deputy Goad, according to the probable cause affidavit, Butler alleged she did not know the individual was in the attic. She alleged the last she knew he had left the previous night after they had gotten into an argument. She said she didn’t know he was there or she would have informed the officers.

When speaking with the individual, Deputy Goad asked how long he’d been in the attic. The individual alleged he went into the attic when the officers first knocked on the door. When Deputy Goad told him Butler claimed she had not seen him all day, he alleged she was just doing what he told her to.

When she was transported to Greene County Jail, her bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.

She appeared in Greene Superior Court on Sept. 18.
